Our Hero

Never in all my years of teaching have I had to face a challenge quite like this with my students. One of our very own third graders was diagnosed with osteosarcoma (bone cancer). We have watched him bravely face his treatment plan since December. Chemo and rotationplasty along with long and countless hospitalizations became his new normal as we tarried on in the land of third grade.

Almost daily we grieved over the empty desk that was his or stick that was pulled with his name or maybe the workbook that belonged to him. Although he wasn't physically with us, we new his spirit was always there. He had a spirit of kindness, humor, and good heartedness. We tried to put those things first. If we couldn't have him, then we would have pieces of the goodness he brought to our classroom.

And somehow without being said, we knew that whatever hard task that may lie before us throughout the days and weeks of third grade, it was nothing compared to the battle that our Henry was fighting. We rallied around him and declared him as Henry Our Hero. We never knew our annual MBES relay would be done in honor of one of our very own.

The constant question was, "When is Henry coming back?" It is so hard to avoid big questions, but none of us had an answer to that one. Until the day he did return. It was a grand entrance- one the students who were there will never forget. We just could hardly contain our excitement for him as he drove up in a limo where the whole school was cheering for him. The red carpet was rolled out. He came with an entourage of loved ones and the paparazzi!

All the limelight could not dim the light that was shining in all of us. He was really here. This evil disease did not swallow up our friend and our student. He looked a little different from the Henry we remembered, but his kindness, humor, and goodheartedness could not be mistaken. We could finally answer the question of when he was coming back. "He is here students! He is right here where he belongs."

Tony is off on a another educational adventure, one of Assistant Principal at an elementary school. I kid and say he is crossing over to the dark side! I know he will do great as an administrator. He will love belonging to a school family again. And as Hillary lovingly reminded me, he will have a whole new appreciation for what I have done all these years!

I am so proud of him. He puts his mind to it and makes it happen. I like to think I do play a small part in his successes. So thankful to be part of all he does and accomplishes.

That's a Wrap

The end of the year is so hectic with all things coming to and end and all kinds of things to celebrate. Throw into that busy mix two stomach bugs and strep throat, and my eye started twitching again! We welcome the dramatic change of pace of summer.
Cam and Chase saved their behavior tickets and cash them in to be on the school's marquis! That boy wants his name in lights!
The Cubs finished out their season. Cam's bat heated up during the last few games and he needed with a triple, a homerun, and another triple! He also became a reliable pitcher, making me realize how nerve-wracking it was for my parents when I was on the mound all those years ago.
On the last Friday of the school year, this girl finally walked without me to her classroom. Yes. I have walked her every morning all year. What a relief to know she can do it on her own!
She came to MBES friendless but has managed to make some sweet friends this year.
She had to pick strawberries this year since we missed it last year. Love this girl and the traditions she already cherishes!

It's hard to believe that Cam's third grade year is complete and Maeve conquered Kindergarten.

And I closed the door on a long chapter of third grade. After 13 years (long enough to go through K-12), I am getting out of my comfort zone and trying my hand at something new. I am excited for the change and to discover new and different ages and resources.

Field Day Fun

This is the day Cam counts down to starting in August. Maeve wasn't sure about it, but I think next year she will be excited about it too.
